Welcome to Community Service, a biweekly newsletter featuring a curated selection of art and design events in Montreal. This edition covers events happening during August.
Workshop: Grant Writing by Céline Bureau
August 13th (5-7pm) - Online
Starting the edition off with something a little more practical for everybody. Céline Bureau is offering their third annual grant writing workshop. This bilingual workshop will answer questions about the grant application process, complete with a run through of a CALQ grant. You can register for the workshop (and become a member of Céline Bureau) through this link.
Vernissage: Motif
August 15th (5pm) - Espace Loulou
Motif is the debut group show by Charles Lebrun, Joss D'Alton, Leo Grenier and Vincent Roy. The works presented center around the artists' formal explorations and make use of motifs and shapes, through repetition and variation, to create immediate visual experiences. The vernissage takes place Thursday, August 15th at Espace Loulou at 5pm. The works will be available for viewing until Monday, August 19th from 12 to 5pm.
Vernissage: Porosité structure personnelle by Jules Deslandes
August 15th (7-10pm) - Gham & Dafe
Jules Deslandes is an artist who works on the expressive use of game engines, 3D animation and digital fabrication technologies. His solo show Porosité structure personnelle takes over the vitrine of Gham & Dafe (and a little bit of the inside!) for a midissage on Thursday, August 15th. BYOB.
Launch: Geissler x Soie Lait collaboration
August 15th (5pm) - Boutique Take Three
I’m officially adventuring into the world of fashion as art with this one! The Geissler x Soie Lait collaboration began nearly a year ago, with the common goal of creating singular pieces that carried an environmental conscience. The result is a mini-collection of five unique leather bags and two textile bags, all handmade from scraps and second-hand materials.
Boutique Take Three is hosting the launch celebration, with a first glimpse at the collection and large-format photographs by Fatine Violette Sabiri. 5% of all profits made from the collection will be redistributed to Awe Exchange, a non profit strengthening global environmental movements through awe.
Exhibition: Hybrid
August 23rd (6-9pm) - L’ÉLOI
Hybrid is presented by L’ÉLOI as part of day two of FORUM, the annual 3-day design conference by graphic design studio Caserne. Curated by Jodi Heartz and Chloe Latour (that’s me!!!), the ephemeral exhibition features work by photographers, designers and multidisciplinary artists that operate within the liminal space between subjects and mediums. The chimeras created as a result bridge the gaps between cultural heritage, ecological responsibility, complex emotion and technological progress. Here is the RSVP link, I would love to see you there <3
Reading: Two Readers and Music by Yolk Literary
August 25th (7pm) - Location upon RSVP
It’s been a long time since I walked into the St Henri apartment where Yolk Literary first started, back when they used to encourage you to throw eggs at their readers. Their new series Two Readers and Music features Montreal-based novelists Frankie Barnet and Neil Smith, sax/woodwind musician Ivy Boxall, and zero eggs, which is fine!! They’ve managed to keep the intimacy and conviviality of that first night. The exact location of the apartment series, which is now in the Village, is revealed 24 hours before the event to those who RSVP.
If you have an art or design-related event you would like to include in future editions of the newsletter, you can send us a DM or email communityservmag@gmail.com
See you around.
