Publication launch: The Page Issue 2
June 20th (7pm) - Bar WILLS
The Page is a free, one-page, innovatively sentimental print publication that showcases writing and art from Montreal and beyond. Their second issue will be out on June 20th, coupled with an exciting launch event at Bar Wills.
Vernissage: Black Summer ‘91
June 20th - Fonderie Darling
BLACK SUMMER ‘91 is an interdisciplinary project conceived by cultural curator Rito Joseph. Contemporary art and local history come together in this group exhibition featuring the work of Patrick F. Henry, Shaya Ishaq, Aaron Jones, Michaëlle Sergile, and Carl-Philippe Simonise, as well as a selection of archives, reflecting events that occurred in five neighbourhoods in the summer of 1991, in protest of systemic violence against Black communities.
Vernissage: HUMAN FORM / ANYONG TAO by Florence Solis
June 20th (5-8pm) - Duran Mashaal Gallery
Drawing from the artist’ childhood experiences in the Phillipine, HUMAN FORM/ ANYONG TAO is inspired by themes of nature juxtaposed with everyday scenes of domestic life. The paintings create a surreal world of distorted memories, reminiscent of the mother figures Solis grew up with. The paintings serve as a visual journal of the artist’ emotional and mental state, helping her make sense of her current metamorphosis.
Midissage: Un/Situ by Hooria Rahimi
June 20th (6-9pm) - Slip Space Gallery
Hooria Rahimi is a neon light artist and MFA Candidate in Intermedia arts at Concordia. Their Master’s thesis show, Un/Situ, will open on June 17th at the MFA Gallery Slip Space (room VA 1.02, VA Building, Concordia University, 1395 Boul. René-Lévesque O) with a “midissage” on June 20th.
Publication launch: Espaces spéculatifs, Volume 0
June 22nd (2:30pm) - Galerie Pierre-François Ouellette
Journal “Espaces spéculatifs” stems from a research-creation group of the same name, founded within the School of Visual and Media Arts at UQAM. This group aims to study and expand knowledge related to the notion of space within the interdisciplinary arts, as well as to experiment with new polysensorial arrangements of time and space.
The journal offers visual and textual essays presented by invited specialists on relevant themes. In this context, the installation devices – whether architectural, media-related, or performative – enable the study and experimentation of exhibition as a medium.
Vernissage: Secular
June 22nd - Temple Projects
I’m taking you out of the city for the long weekend.
Housed in a former chapel in East Bolton, Temple Projects is an initiative of designer Simon Johns that brings together designers, artists, and in-betweens to share, support, and experiment through events and exhibitions outside commercial contexts. Featured artists include Malcolm Majer, Aymuyia, Jean-Michel Gadoua, Rachel Bussin, Lauren Goodman, Edith Sevigny-Martel, Will Choui, Simon Johns, Hannah Bigeleisen, Alexandre Joncas, Kin & Company, Olivier Bonnard, and Steven Bukowski.
Please note that this event is RSVP only, which you can do by emailing hello@temple-projects.com
