Welcome to Community Service, a biweekly newsletter featuring a curated selection of art and design events in Montreal. This edition of the newsletter covers events happening the first weeks of June.
Release: PILOT art megalist
June 1st (11am) - Online
Because I want to keep you all gainfully employed. The Pilot art list came out with their summer megalist on Saturday, June 1st. $7 will get you access to over 150 funded calls for artists, designers, architects, studios, curators, galleries, writers. A lot of the calls come out of Montreal, but if you want to travel, there are calls from all over Canada and the US.
Vernissage: An Almost Distant Thing
June 6th (5pm) - Patel Brown Gallery
An Almost Distant Thing is a group exhibition curated by Joséphine Rivard and Roxanne Arsenault. It will feature works by Karen Kraven, Alberto Porro, Maddie McNeely, Émilie Allard, B. Brookbank, and Maya Fuhr.
Vernissage: madskills
June 6th (6-9pm) - CCA
By juxtaposing content related to construction work produced by social media users alongside items from the CCA collection, madskills investigates how these new forms of self-documentation might change how construction workers are perceived, as well as shape future discussions about their work in relation to the built environment.
Vernissage & Book launch: Actes de présence by William Sabourin
June 7th (5-9pm) - Espace Maurice
Actes de présence is both a book and an exhibition by William Sabourin, showcasing his photographic works from 2016 to 2023. This project creates an anonymous location made of fragments from different cities, investigating the narrative potential of photography and the various ways to read images.
Reading: Nouveau Poem 2
June 8th (9pm) - Nouveau Palais
Kate Nugent, Emilie Lafleur, and Pamela Beyer’s ultra fun poetry reading series Nouveau Poem is back with its second edition Saturday, June 8th at Nouveau Palais. This reading will feature new writing by Lucy Pauker, Ryan Allen, Florence Quirion, Philippe Miriello, Reilly Tuesday, Brad Casey, and Isabelle Stephen.
Book Launch: Brushing Shoulders by Boris Halas
June 13th - Location TBD
Boris won’t answer my texts, so this is all I got for you. More details to come (hopefully).
Vernissage: Choisir la douceur
June 14th (6pm) - Le Livart
For the second year, Le Livart invites artists from its boutique to take over the gallery. This summer’s exhibition sees Béatrice Dubreuil, Isadora-Ayesha Lima, and Niti Marcelle Mueth addressing environmental issues, self-care, and community well-being. Offering a glimpse of their practices outside the boutique, Choisir la douceur showcases a range of artistic practices, from photography and painting to weaving and printing techniques.
