Week 26: June 2nd
Art Sur Papier, Celestial Burden, Blueprints of Belonging, and more.

Welcome to Community Service, a biweekly newsletter featuring a curated selection of art and design events in Montreal. I’m going to keep this one short and sweet, since I’ve been back in Montreal for about 22 minutes. This edition covers events happening during the beginning of June.

Vernissage: Art Sur Papier
June 5th (5-8pm) - Galerie Erga
The fifth edition of Art Sur Papier is upon us! Head to Galerie Erga for a group show of 39 Canadian artists creating through a diverse range of artistic styles, subject matters, and colour palettes. The pieces each engage with the materiality of paper through painting, drawing, printmaking, installation and sculpture. Each of the works contribute to an exhibition that honours the adaptability of paper.
Vernissage: Celestial Burden by Kelly Davis
June 5th (5-10pm) - Galerie Deschênes
Marking the second exhibition at Galerie Deschênes, located at the Iberville Lofts, Celestial Burden deepens painter Kelly Davis’s exploration of portals—thresholds where myth, fiction, and the unknown converge. Known for her richly textured and hypnotic compositions, Davis approaches the canvas as a scrying surface and tool for communing with the subtle realms. In this context, painting becomes less an act of representation than a process of gnosis. Ambiguity draws the viewer in, positioning them as an active participant in the work’s decoding, and where the flow between narrative worlds emerges as its central focus.
Spring Market: Items 07
June 7th-8th (11am-6pm) - Le Livart
To celebrate the arrival of spring, Le Livart is opening up its spaces for the seventh edition of Items—a market of discoveries that has become a beloved event for the community. It highlights the work of 15 artists, artisans, and designers through a curated selection of design objects, fashion creations, natural and food products, and much more. Head to Le Livart’s instagram page for the full list of participants for this year’s edition.
Vernissage: Since 1957 by Alan Belcher
June 7th (4-7pm) - Galerie Eli Kerr

Book Launch: Strangers Need Strange Moments Together by Daily tous les jours
June 12 (6-9pm) - CCA Bookstore
Daily tous les jours’ first publication, Strangers Need Strange Moments Together, invites a broad range of readers to take a joyful approach to building resilient urban communities and re-enchanting public space.
Reflecting on our period of unprecedented urban growth, the book sheds light on the importance of forging new modes of public interaction. Cities must be spaces for the whimsical, unexpected, and weird, and for wasted time and strange moments of serendipitous encounter.
Vernissage: Blueprints of Belonging
June 14th (6pm) - Galerie Entretemps/Meanwhile
Curated by Lawrence Fafard, Blueprints of Belonging is a photography exhibition that explores the fragmented and evolving ways in which trans and non-binary people build a sense of belonging. Through cyanotypes, portraits, and collages, the exhibition maps out a sensitive cartography of gazes, gestures, and spaces where the idea of 'home' is reinvented.
