Welcome to Community Service, a biweekly newsletter featuring a curated selection of art and design events in Montreal. Nothing cheeky in the intro this week, just a quick thank you to everybody who has supported Community Service until now, I see you I love you <3. This edition covers events happening during the last week of March.
Vernissage: 1985. Image Worlds
March 27th (5pm) - Vox Centre de l’image contemporaine
The 1980s ushered in an era dominated by images–a visual history shaped by postmodernism, the mass media, fashion, design, music video, photography and video art. Forty years on, those images undeniably have true political import. They do more than illustrate visual trends: they have altered our perceptions and our thoughts, acting as catalysts for the social transformation of our World.
In celebration of its 40th anniversary, VOX is looking back on that decade, which left its mark on its history and that of Québec.
Art Matters Festival Closing Party: Mingled Memories
March 27th (7pm) - Nomad, 129 av. Van Horne
Mingled Memories leaves no barriers between the audience and the pieces exhibited, with each installation and performance presented up-close and personal, challenging viewers to interact with them to the fullest extent. The artists present sculptures that play their own soundtracks, a walk-through projection exhibit showcasing a reimagined version of Montreal, a new feminist take on Indian classical dance, and a performance set in a fantastical depanneur. Explore questions of imagination, the passage of time, and above all else, finding our shared similarities amongst our differences. Engage with a final Adapted Vision for a future where community comes first, and collaboration supersedes division.
Vernissage: Burning Rage - A Reckoning by Adela Goldbard
March 28th (5:30pm) - SBC Gallery of Contemporary Art

Launch: Pamplemousse Magazine 4
March 28th (9pm) - Bar le 21
Pamplemousse Magazine is a fashion, arts, and culture magazine at McGill University published by Circle of Fashion.
Issue 04 is centered around the theme of 'reprise', provoking reflections on fashion's enduring narratives, its revivals, and the deeper meanings it evokes through nostalgia and sentimentalities. This issue features a collection of photography, styling, conversations with local fashion designers, and short essays. Selected works explore the influence of conservatism on fashion, the emergence of biotextiles, the resurgence of denim and 'indie sleaze', and the social construction of fashion through Baudrillard and Barthes. Together, these inquiries show how fashion holds significance and elicits memories for us all, personally and collectively. Tickets are available here.
