Week 12: October 8th
Sophie Presente's debut exhibition, a few Montreal/Paris magazine launches, a decade of Metatron Press, and more.
Welcome to Community Service, a biweekly newsletter featuring a curated selection of art and design events in Montreal. CS goes global this week (not really, I’m just traveling), so I’m jealous of everyone that can actually go to the events in this edition, which covers Montreal happenings during the month of October.

For one night only at the Complexe du Canal Lachine, over 75 artists will open the doors to their studios and let you peek inside. There’s also a group exhibition happening in the building at EK Voland Art Gallery.

Vernissage: Addison R.
October 10th (6-8pm) - Produit Rien
Sophie Latouche’s first curation since leaving Pangée, very exciting! Drawing inspiration from Liz Magor’s exhibition “I is being This” presented at Catriona Jeffreys in 2012, Addison R. delves into merchandising and how artists manipulate found images and objects examining commercial narratives and the ideas commercial products conceal. The group show will feature works by Sara Yukiko, Alli Melanson, Isabella Kressin, Connor Bokovay & Tiziana La Melia.
Vernissage: kaka by Tomas Dessureault
October 10th (6-11pm) - WIP
In collaboration with Galerie Va Savoir, Tomas Dessureault is putting on a solo show entitled kaka. Featuring Dessureault’s works from the past year, kaka is as much a declaration of violence and pain as it is a fight for hope and love and peace. Omar Attia, MOAB, and Charlotte Bickerstaff will perform in honour of the event.
Collection Launch: Jacques et Anna
October 10th (6pm-late) - Jacques et Anna
Jacques et Anna are celebrating a new era, featuring a new name, a recent partnership with SImon S. Belleau, multiple exciting collaborations, and a new collection launch. The event will also feature ceramics by Sarah-Jeanne Riberdy and objects created by Jeremy Paguet, Nicholas Sangaré, FOUND, Bibelot, and Vivi Lamarre. This event is RSVP only, which you can do by following this link.

Magazine Launch: JTM 001
October 17th (6pm) - CCA Bookstore
Remember that really cool and elusive magazine you saw popping up all over your explore page all summer? Well, they’re finally here with a launch event for their first issue “Pour que tu m’aimes encore” at the CCA bookstore. The annual publication explores approaches in art, design, architecture and scenography. Each issue is devoted to a particular theme which guides the selection of subjects, spaces, pieces or people. JTM presents an annual vision of architecture and design, paying great attention to those who create with their greatest emotions and who shape the creation of tomorrow.
Issue Launch: Suko Mag Volume 3
October 17th (6-11pm) - Cardinal Tea Room
I love an independent Montreal magazine moment! Suko Mag is back with Volume 3: Frontiers, for which they will have a vernissage at Cardinal Tea Room. That’s all I know, but there will most likely be some more info coming out this week, so stay tuned!
Event: BYO-X: Bring Your Own Fable
October 17th (6:30-9pm) - Ada X
Ada X is a bilingual feminist artist-run centre dedicated to exploration, creation, and critical reflection in media arts and digital culture. This is their third edition of BYO-X, Bring Your Own Fable, in which they invite participants to connect with likeminded people in Montreal’s media arts community, while learning new skills in digital drawing and animation.
